MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons), the world's oldest multi-user roleplaying game
MMORPGs are noted to have surfaced somewhere around the 1990's; with the creation of MUDs (an entirely non-graphical text-based multi-user roleplaying game first developed by Richard Bartle and Roy Trubshaw), MMORPGs began to grow in the commercial business.
The first commercial MMORPG was Islands of Kesmai designed by Kelton Flinn and John Taylor. This game became available to consumers in 1984 for $12.00 per hour via a CompuServe (CompuServe Information Services, or CIS) online service.
Islands of Kesmai was one of the first successful multi-user online role-playing games.
